When I opened the package of the Gerber Gator Machete I was pleased to see that it is a full sized brush knife. I tried it out yesterday right out of the package (without sharpening) and so far so good. It's a quality tool that I would expect from this manufacturer. Great handle, nice heft and action, and great price. I have owned and used many brush knives over my surveying carrer including the Bartaux and others. This will be my new favorite. Brought it back and stroked it a few times with the flat file and took a nice edge quickly and easily. Steel is harder than cheaper machetes but not so hard as the Bartaux which is difficult to sharpen. Even tried out the saw. It could be better but basically worked ok (hey, it's a nice bonus). Not something I would use all the time but could come in handy for miscellaneous makshift tasks such as making hubs, cutting small trees or larger branches. Better than carrying another tool. The sheath is a nice bonus also.
