This can be strapped to another pack or to an external-frame-pack-frame (with the pack removed) – or just carry it with the strap. I use it for my botany bag as it's perfect for some tools, snacks, and some light cloths. Fits a laptop just fine with space leftover. It doesn't come waterproofed but can be waxed or sprayed equally as easy. The only thing I didn't like is I had to add a clip to make the shoulder strap even shorter. I'm not a tall guy so even the shortest the strap went still hung too low to reduce swaying. Would be five stars, but the top of the side pocket leaves the top-sides of whatever is in that pocket exposed, and the internal pocket with all the pen-holsters lined up in front of it also needs a top. It's more like a 4.5 stars but the non waterproofing and two pockets that aren't perfect drop it .5 stars.
