Description
USDA Calibrated Soil Identification Kit
This USDA Soil Texture kit consists of eight air-dried soil samples which have been calibrated by passing through particle-size screens and confirmed for fine-grained percentages using a hydrometer. Each sample is approximately 250 ml (a little more than a cup) and is stored in a glass jar along with a sample ID with the USDA Textural Name and the precise grain size percentages. Texture ranges from loamy sand to silt loam to clay. Kit includes a quiz sheet and an answer sheet listing of the Texture Class name contained within the kit, as well as sand, silt, and clay fraction percentage. The soil specimens are collected from the Red River Valley near Fargo, North Dakota; near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; in the Missouri River bottom near Onawa, Iowa, and near Ames, Iowa.

Where was this kit 20 years ago when I started my career? It's a great idea and great help with practicing my USDA soil textures.
